In recent years, Mudanjiang City has been actively developing its new materials industry, which has now begun to take shape—currently home to 48 enterprises above designated size, accounting for about 7% of the city’s industrial sector. Their products primarily fall into four key product lines: advanced materials, specialty fibers and composite materials, cutting-edge chemical raw materials, and innovative building functional materials.
Mudanjiang boasts abundant mineral resources, with 80 types of minerals already discovered and 41 of them having confirmed reserves—accounting for 47.1% of Heilongjiang Province and 17.5% of the national total. The region is particularly rich in energy resources such as coal and oil shale, as well as metallic resources like iron, copper, and gold. Additionally, it holds significant non-metallic resources, including graphite, sillimanite, wollastonite, calcite, quartz sand, fireclay, basalt, granite, perlite, pumice, volcanic ash, and marble.
Thanks to advancements in recent years, Mudanjiang City’s new materials industry has expanded its product range dramatically—from a single carbon boride variety to dozens of types, including silicon carbide, boron carbide, industrial-grade silicon, and specialized ceramic materials along with finished products. Carbon boride powder currently accounts for 40% of the global market and 80% of China’s domestic market. Meanwhile, 80% of the city’s industrial finished products are exported, capturing 15% of the international market and 80% of the domestic market. Mudanjiang has emerged as the world’s largest export hub for green silicon carbide powder, shipping over 20,000 tons annually—equivalent to 60% of the global market share. Mudanjiang’s Specialized Materials Industrial Base has been recognized as a National High-Tech Industrialization Base, making it one of just three such bases in Heilongjiang Province. Additionally, Mudanjiang is a key production center for graphite within the province, with proven graphite ore reserves totaling 240 million tons. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the city plans to launch three major graphite deep-processing projects.
Mudanjiang is actively promoting the development of advanced materials and has become a national special materials industry base under the "863 Program," as designated by China's Ministry of Science and Technology. Jinguangzuan Boron Carbide Company has established a postdoctoral research workstation and a provincial-level enterprise technology center. Meanwhile, Chenxi Boron Carbide Company has formed an industry-academia-research collaboration with the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The city is also home to several R&D institutions, including the Provincial Paper Industry Research Institute and the Hard Alloy Research Institute. Additionally, Mudanjiang Normal University boasts a provincial key laboratory focused on novel carbon-based functional and ultra-hard materials, currently staffed by 33 doctoral and master’s degree holders. The lab is involved in 25 scientific research projects at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, having secured 3 national patents. Its primary research areas include diamond films and related materials, low-dimensional materials, and applications in electronic functional materials.
